The Extension Cord Through the Window Is the Dangerous Way to Run a Generator
Backfeeding your house from a portable generator can send power down the line to a lineman who has no reason to think it's live.

The power goes out, and somewhere in the garage there's a generator that hasn't run since last time. The fastest fix people reach for is obvious: run an extension cord from the generator through a cracked window to whatever needs power, or worse, plug the generator into a dryer outlet and let it feed backward through the house wiring. It works, in the sense that the lights come on. It's also one of the more dangerous shortcuts in home electrical work, and not just for the person doing it.
Why backfeeding is a real danger, not just a rule
When you plug a generator into an outlet and let it push power backward through your home's wiring, that power doesn't stop at your panel. It can travel back out through the meter and onto the utility line outside your house, the same line a utility crew may be working on to restore power in the neighborhood. Those crews assume a de-energized line during an outage, because that's what an outage means. A backfed line can put voltage on a wire a lineman has every reason to believe is dead. That's not a hypothetical, it's the specific reason backfeeding is treated as seriously as it is in the trade.
There's a second danger closer to home, too. An extension cord running through a window or door usually isn't rated for the load or the exposure it's getting, and a generator running in or near an enclosed space is a carbon monoxide risk that's caused real deaths in exactly these situations.
The two ways to do it safely
Both options isolate your house wiring from the utility line the moment you switch to generator power, which is the entire point:
- A generator interlock kit is a mechanical device installed in your existing panel that physically prevents the main utility breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. It's a relatively affordable retrofit for a panel that already has room, and it lets you power your whole panel, one circuit at a time as needed, from a portable generator through a proper inlet rather than a window.
- A whole-home generator hookup, paired with a standby or larger portable unit, uses an automatic or manual transfer switch to do the same isolation on a bigger scale, often switching over on its own within seconds of an outage rather than waiting for someone to go flip a switch.
Which one makes sense usually comes down to how often you expect to need it and how much of the house you want covered. A family that loses power a few times a year during storms and mainly wants the refrigerator, some lights, and a few outlets running is often well served by an interlock kit and a portable generator they already own or plan to buy. A household or business that can't tolerate an extended outage, medical equipment on site, a well pump, a business that can't close, tends to land on a whole-home setup instead.
