What fails, and why
Texas outages are not rare, and the response we see most often is an extension cord run through a cracked window to a portable generator sitting in the driveway. It works, in the sense that a lamp turns on. It also means the generator is backfeeding power into the house wiring uncontrolled, with no way to guarantee it cannot travel back out through the meter and onto the line outside, at the exact moment a utility crew may be working on that same line believing it is dead. That is the actual danger a portable generator creates without an interlock, not a hypothetical one.
An extension cord through a window has a second problem that has nothing to do with backfeeding: it only reaches whatever the cord is long enough to plug into. A refrigerator or two, maybe a window unit. It does not touch the well pump, the furnace blower, or anything hardwired, because those were never built to run off a cord in the first place.

How we work
The two configurations we install are a portable generator interlock kit and a whole-home hookup, and the choice usually comes down to what the household actually needs powered and what the panel can support. An interlock kit is a mechanical switch installed in the panel plus an inlet mounted on the outside of the house, so a portable generator plugs directly into the house wiring through that inlet. The interlock makes it physically impossible to have the main breaker and the generator breaker on at the same time, which is what stops the backfeed at the source rather than relying on someone remembering to flip a switch correctly under stress.
A whole-home hookup is a bigger job: it is sized against the panel's full capacity rather than a handful of circuits, and it is the option when the goal is keeping most or all of the house running rather than a few key loads. Either way it starts with the same panel assessment we run before any electrical upgrade, because the existing service has to be able to carry what the generator plan asks of it.

Aftercare
An interlock kit or a whole-home hookup is only useful if it still works the day the power actually goes out, so it is worth testing before storm season rather than during it: run the generator, throw the interlock, confirm the house picks up the load cleanly. That takes a few minutes and it is the difference between finding a problem on a calm afternoon and finding it in the dark.
